Review of Helen Fenton

The Southern highlands Classic Jazz and Ragtime weekend held in Mittagong in April  is a highlight on the jazz calendar. This year was no exception. The headline concert on the Saturday night was a tribute to Artie Shaw featuring the original charts played by some of Australia’s top jazz Musicians. Helen was the featured vocalist on some great tunes including Any old Time (Billy Holliday), Say it with a Kiss, Deep Purple & Moonray among others.

It’s rare these days to find a singer who can hold her own with a 14 piece orchestra. Helen has the classical quality, clarity of voice and poise to compliment the music, where every word can be heard and is sung with great feeling. If you get a chance to hear this talented lady you are in for a treat.

Following my request for copies of her CD’s to put in the Victorian  Jazz Archive for future generations, Helen sent down “The Simple Life”  2003 and  “After Dark”  1998 both released by La Brava music.

Both highlight Helen Fenton at her best, singing some classic jazz standards and latin tunes with great feeling and style accompanied by two top orchestras. Her style is both laid back and exciting and always sophisticated.

Two of my  favourite tracks on ‘After Dark’ are ‘Angel Eyes’ and ‘Let’s get away from  it All’ Do yourself a favour and buy both CDs  you won’t be disappointed.
